concession pivot
Use a concession pivot to write one sentence about access to technology in education.
While [X] are certainly more likely to [negative trend] nowadays, [positive counterforce] means that they are also more likely to [positive outcome].
"While individuals are certainly more likely to be diagnosed with life-threatening diseases nowadays, early detection means that they are also more likely to be cured."
Concession pivot — acknowledges a worsening trend, then flips it by showing how a countervailing factor produces a better outcome than expected.
→ While students are certainly more likely to be distracted by devices nowadays, improved digital literacy programs mean that they are also more likely to use technology productively.
condition clause
Use a condition clause to write one sentence about the impact of environment on personal development.
But if [subject] is already [state/condition], [result] won't make as big a difference as it would if [alternative scenario].
"But if you're already an adult it won't make as big a difference as it would if you moved as a baby."
Condition clause — compares the effect of an action depending on timing or starting state, implying that earlier intervention yields stronger results.
→ But if a child has already formed poor study habits, a better school environment won't make as big a difference as it would if they had attended from the start.
cause-effect chain
Use a cause-effect chain to write one sentence about economic development and public health.
[Place] has [advantage A], [advantage B], [advantage C]... In addition, [X] seems to lead to [downstream effect], so [consequence], and therefore more [people] can [do something for themselves].
"In developed countries there is more access to medical care, higher quality food for all citizens, cleaner water, etc... In addition, it seems like a more developed country would have better access to jobs, so less poverty, and therefore more people can afford to take care of themselves."
Cause-effect chain — stacks systemic advantages and traces a downstream social consequence step by step, ending at the individual level.
→ In urban areas there is more access to gyms, nutritious food, and wellness clinics. In addition, city dwellers seem to have better access to health information, so greater awareness, and therefore more people can make informed lifestyle choices.
then-vs-now contrast
Use a then-vs-now contrast to write one sentence about workplace safety standards.
In the past, it was normal for [people] to [old behavior], but nowadays [authority/system] encourages [people] to [new behavior] on [a regular basis].
"In the past, it was normal for people to go decades without getting a regular checkup, but nowadays local authorities encourage people to get checked out by a doctor on an annual basis."
Then-vs-now contrast — highlights a behavioral or systemic shift over time to show progress, using "in the past... but nowadays" as the pivot.
→ In the past, it was normal for workers to operate machinery without any protective gear, but nowadays regulatory bodies require employees to wear certified safety equipment on a daily basis.
Use a concession pivot (Although) to write one sentence about screen time and children's social skills.
Although [subject] are less likely to [activity] nowadays, they still [positive outcome] than in the past.
"Although children are less likely to have physical education classes or play outside nowadays, they still suffer from fewer diseases than in the past."
Concession pivot (Although) — grants a seemingly negative trend upfront, then counters it with a surprising or reassuring outcome, using "still" as the pivot word.
→ Although children are less likely to meet friends face-to-face nowadays, they still maintain stronger social networks than previous generations did.
