Independent variables
Factor you change to see what effect it has.
Dependent Variables
The variable that is affected by a positive charge.
Control
A variable left constant to serve as a baseline.
Scientific method
An idealized process of inquiry. Step by step process used by scientists to test ideas.
Importance
Refers to something that is vital to life.
Order of steps
Referring to the order of steps in DNA synthesis or the order of steps in scientific method.
Anatomy
Scientific study of creatures’ physical structures.
Physiology
Branch of biology that studies how living organisms’ bodies function.
What is the difference between a positive and negative feedback loop? Which is more common in the human body?
The most common is negative feedback loop. The response acts in opposition to the initial stimulus. An example is insulin being released when sugar is eaten. Positive feedback reinforces the stimulus; an example is hormones released during the birthing process.
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and mass. Made up of elements.
What are isotopes and their importance?
All atoms have the same number of protons, but they have different numbers of neutrons. Radioactive isotopes give off energy and this can be used in medicine for diagnostic tools.
What is a valence electron?
These are the electrons in the outermost shell of the atom, also known as the valence shell. This determines the chemical behavior of the atom. When it is full the element is inert.
What is the difference between a molecule and a compound?
Molecules are two or more atoms of the same element that are chemically bonded by a covalent bond. Compound two or more elements chemically bonded.
What is the weakest and strongest bond out of the following?
Covalent is strongest. This is when atoms share electrons in their valence shell. The weakest is Van Der Waals bond.
What bond transfers electrons?
Ionic bonds
What bond sares electrons?
Covalent bond.
What is an isomer?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but with different structure and arrangement. Creates different properties.
What is an enantiomer?
Isomers that are mirror images of each other.
What are major properties of water?
Unique molecular structure and polarity that make it vital for life. Can form hydrogen bonds, universal solvent.
Is water polar or non polar?
Water is polar
What is neutral pH?
7.0
What is an acidic pH?
Less than 7.0
What is basic/alkaline pH?
More than 7.0
What is an electrolyte?
Substances that have a natural positive or negative electron change when dissolved in water.
