Hemodynamics
The study of blood moving through the circulatory system.
Vasoconstriction
A narrowing of blood vessels which increases resistance and decreases blood flow.
Vasodilation
A widening of blood vessels which decreases resistance and increases blood flow.
Doppler Effect
The change in frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source.
Transducer
A device that converts one form of energy into another, commonly used in ultrasound.
Stenosis
Narrowing of a blood vessel that can restrict blood flow.
Aneurysm
An abnormal bulge in the wall of a blood vessel caused by weakness in the vessel wall.
Plaque
A buildup of fatty deposits in arteries that can lead to blockages.
Turbulent Flow
Irregular, chaotic flow patterns often occurring around obstructions.
Embolism
The blockage of a blood vessel by a foreign object such as a blood clot or air bubble.
DVT
Deep Vein Thrombosis, a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, often in the legs.
Intravenous
Pertaining to blood vessels, typically used to describe the administration of fluids or medications.
Arteriovenous Fistula
An abnormal connection between an artery and a vein, bypassing the capillary system.
Vena Cava
The large vein that carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
Capillaries
The smallest blood vessels where gas and nutrient exchange occurs.
Spectral Doppler
A form of Doppler ultrasound that provides information on the speed and direction of blood flow.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
A circulatory condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs.
Ischemia
Insufficient blood flow to the tissues, leading to a shortage of oxygen needed for cellular metabolism.
Atherosclerosis
A disease in which plaque builds up inside arteries.
Raynaud's Phenomenon
Episodes of vasospasm causing reduced blood flow, often in response to cold or stress.
Inferior Vena Cava (IVC)
The large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the right atrium of the heart.
Tardus Parvus
A specific waveform pattern seen in Doppler studies indicating proximal arterial disease.
Transcranial Doppler
An ultrasound test used to examine blood flow in the brain's major arteries.
B-mode Imaging
A 2D ultrasound imaging technique that provides a cross-sectional view of tissues.
Plethysmography
A test to measure changes in volume within an organ or whole body.
Balloon Angioplasty
A procedure to widen narrowed or obstructed blood vessels.
Bypass Graft
A surgical procedure to create a new path for blood flow around a blocked artery.
