Causal Claim

Generalization Claim

Outcome Factor

The variable in a causal claim that experiences the effect or change resulting from the causal factor (e.g., Top Talent Quitting, Weight Gain).

Claimed Effect

The stated relationship, direction, or action connecting the causal factor to the outcome factor (e.g., drives, boosts, reverses).

Population of Interest

The target group of individuals or entities being described in a generalization claim (e.g., Americans, U.S. Adults, Smartphone Users).

Attribute

The specific characteristic, behavior, condition, or experience measured in a generalization claim (e.g., feeling stressed about the economy, using a dating app).

Estimate

The specific ratio, proportion, fraction, or percentage reported in a generalization claim (e.g., 8 in 10, A Third, 86%).
