Phase 1: Pre-Prophethood & Early Life (571 – 610 CE)The Era of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance): Pre-Islamic Arabia was deeply tribal, polytheistic, and fractured. Idolatry was centered around the Ka'bah. Social injustices like burying infant daughters alive, rampant tribal warfare, and unchecked slavery were standard.Birth & Lineage: Born into the noble but economically weakened clan of Banu Hashim (part of the Quraysh tribe). His father, Abdullah, died before his birth. His mother was Aminah.Desert Upbringing: As per custom, he was sent to live in the desert with the wet nurse Halimah Sa'diyah to learn pure Arabic and build physical resilience. It was here that the event of Shaqq-as-Sadr (the opening and cleansing of his chest by angels) occurred.Compounding Loss:At age 6: His mother Aminah died.At age 8: His grandfather Abdul-Muttalib, who took custody of him, died.Guardian: His uncle Abu Talib took him in, protecting him for the rest of his life.Youth & Reputation: He worked as a shepherd and later as a merchant. He quickly became renowned throughout Makkah for his impeccable honesty and integrity, earning the titles Al-Sadiq (The Truthful) and Al-Amin (The Trustworthy).Marriage to Khadijah (ra): Impressed by his integrity during a business caravan trade to Syria, a wealthy noble widow named Khadijah bint Khuwaylid proposed marriage. He was 25; she was 40. She became his closest confidante and supporter.Rebuilding the Ka'bah: When a flood damaged the Ka'bah, tribal leaders argued violently over who would place the sacred Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). The Prophet resolved the conflict by putting the stone on a cloak and having every tribal chief lift a corner together, preventing a civil war.Phase 2: The Makkan Era & Persecution (610 – 622 CE)The First Revelation (610 CE): Seeking spiritual solitude, he spent days meditating in the Cave of Hira on Mount Noor. At age 40, the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared, squeezing him tightly and commanding: "Iqra!" (Read/Proclaim!).The First Believers: Shaken, he ran home to Khadijah, who comforted him. She became the first Muslim. She took him to her Christian cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who confirmed this was the same divine revelation given to Musa (Moses). Early secret converts included Abu Bakr (best friend), Ali ibn Abi Talib (cousin), and Zayd ibn Harithah (adopted son).Public Dawah & Backlash: After three years of secret preaching, command came to go public. He stood on Mount Safa to warn the Makkans. The Quraysh elite, fiercely protective of their idol-worship economy and tribal hierarchy, launched a massive counter-campaign.Persecution & Torture: The elite targeted weak and enslaved Muslims. Sumayyah became the first martyr of Islam. Bilal ibn Rabah was crushed with heavy stones in the burning sand but continuously chanted "Ahad, Ahad" (One God). The Prophet himself had camel intestines dumped on him while praying.Boycott & The Year of Sorrow (619 CE): The Quraysh enforced a total social and economic boycott on Banu Hashim, forcing them into the valley of Shi'b Abi Talib for three years of near-starvation. Shortly after the boycott ended, both Abu Talib (his political protection) and Khadijah (his emotional anchor) died. This was named Am al-Huzn (The Year of Sorrow). The Rejection at Ta'if: Seeking a new base of support, the Prophet walked to the city of Ta'if. The leaders rejected him brutally, setting local children to pelt him with stones until his shoes filled with blood. Instead of cursing them, he prayed that their descendants would accept Islam.Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj (Night Journey & Ascension): To comfort the Prophet, Allah granted him a miraculous night journey. He traveled from Makkah to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem (Isra'), led all the previous Prophets in prayer, and then ascended through the seven heavens (Mi'raj), where the five daily prayers (Salah) were legislated.Pledges of Aqabah: During the Hajj season, pilgrims from the northern city of Yathrib (later Madinah) met the Prophet secretly and accepted Islam. They signed the Pledges of Aqabah, swearing to protect him if he migrated to their city.Phase 3: The Hijrah & Madinan Era (622 – 630 CE)The Hijrah (622 CE): Discovering an assassination plot by the Quraysh, the Prophet and Abu Bakr slipped out of Makkah. They hid in the Cave of Thawr for three days (where a spiderweb and bird's nest miraculously concealed the entrance). They safely arrived in Yathrib, which was renamed Madinat al-Nabi (The City of the Prophet). This migration marks Year 1 of the Islamic Hijri calendar.Building a State:The Mosque: Built Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, which served as a spiritual center, parliament, and community hub.Mu'akhat (Brotherhood): He paired each Makkan refugee (Muhajirun) with a Madinan host (Ansar) to share homes and wealth, instantly solving the refugee economic crisis.Constitution of Madinah: A historic document establishing a multi-faith confederation, granting religious freedom to Jewish tribes, setting defense terms, and uniting the fractured factions. The Major Defense Battles:Battle of Badr (624 CE / 2 AH): 313 ill-equipped Muslims faced 1,000 heavily armed Makkan elite. A miraculous victory that solidified the presence of Islam.Battle of Uhud (625 CE / 3 AH): Archers abandoned their strategic positions on the mountain against orders, looking for spoils. The military genius of Khalid ibn al-Walid (then non-Muslim) turned the tide; the Muslims suffered heavy losses, and the Prophet was injured.Battle of the Trench (627 CE / 5 AH): A massive coalition of 10,000 soldiers marched to wipe out Madinah. Following a suggestion by Salman al-Farsi, the Muslims dug a massive trench around the city. The siege failed due to harsh weather and internal discord among the attackers. The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (628 CE / 6 AH): The Prophet set out with 1,400 unarmed companions to perform Umrah. Blocked by the Quraysh, he negotiated a 10-year peace treaty. Though its terms initially seemed highly unfavorable to the Muslims, it brought structural peace, allowing Islam to spread rapidly across Arabia via diplomacy. Letters were sent to major world emperors (Rome, Persia, Abyssinia).Phase 4: The Final Years (630 – 632 CE)The Conquest of Makkah (630 CE / 8 AH): The Quraysh violated the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah by backing an attack on a Muslim-allied tribe. The Prophet marched on Makkah with an army of 10,000. Realizing they were completely outmatched, Makkah surrendered. The Prophet entered riding humbly, smashed the 360 idols inside the Ka'bah, and issued a general amnesty to his bitterest enemies, saying: "Go, for you are free."The Farewell Pilgrimage (632 CE / 10 AH): The Prophet performed his first and final full Hajj with over 100,000 companions. At Mount Arafat, he delivered the Farewell Sermon (Khutbah al-Wida), which laid out universal ethical benchmarks: complete racial equality, the sacredness of human life and property, women's rights, and the abolition of usury (Riba).Passing Away (11 AH): Shortly after returning, he fell severely ill with a fever. He chose to spend his final days in the room of his wife Aisha (ra). On the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, 11 AH, at the age of 63, he passed away. His death shocked the community; Abu Bakr famously calmed the public by reciting: "Muhammad is no more than a messenger, and indeed messengers have passed away before him…" (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:144).
