Initial impression of Andy
Not positive. He's cold during the case and doesn't evoke our sympathy
Red's impression of Andy
He thought Andy was a rich guy who was important on the outside but is now in prison. Andy is quiet and survives his first night. Our impression of Andy changes as Red's does and we recognise his positive qualities.
Andy's offer to Hadley
His offer to help Hadley in exchange for beer for his fellow prisoners. This change in impression provides a positive general vision and viewpoint.
Andy's music incident and education
He uses his financial skills to climb social status instead of violence like other prisoners or guards such as Boggs. He brightens the prison by sharing the music over the intercom despite the opportunity to listen to it himself and not get caught but he shared it despite it.
Ending
His escape highlights his development from a man who was subjected to the horrors of prison and people with power over him to someone who exposed those men for their actions. His escape is a personal triumph and brings joy to the prisoners
