Population

group of individuals of the same species that can interbreed with one another.

Gene pool

total aggregation of genes in a population ( all alleles ALL combined)

Population genetics

study of genes and genotypes in a population.

Allele

one of the alternative forms of the same gene (A or a).

Genotype

the alleles which an individual has at any given locus / location on the chromosomes.

Phenotype

the physical expression of the genes of an organsims ( what it looks like)

Microevolution

genetic change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation.

Fitness

the relative likelihood a genotype will contribute to the gene pool of the next generation.

Darwinian fitness

the genetic contribution of an individual to the next generation’s gene pool is relative to the average for the population, usually measured by the number of offspring or close kin that survive to reproductive age.

Mean fitness population

average reproductive success of members of a population.

Mutations

ultimate source of genetic variation.
