Compartment

Spaces enclosed by fasciae called intermuscular septa, containing one or more functionally related muscles, nerves and blood vessels.

Pectoralis major

Muscle that flexes, adducts, and medially rotates the humerus.

Rotator Cuff

Group of four muscles that stabilize the shoulder: Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres minor, and Subscapularis (mnemonic: SITS).

Brachialis

The prime mover of elbow flexion.

Iliopsoas

Muscle group consisting of Iliacus and Psoas major that flexes the thigh.

Quadriceps femoris

Muscle group that extends the knee, consisting of Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis, Vastus medialis, and Vastus intermedius.

Gluteus maximus

Muscle that extends and abducts the thigh.

Hamstring

Muscle group in the posterior compartment of the thigh that flexes the knee, consisting of Biceps femoris, Semitendinosus, and Semimembranosus.

Tibialis anterior

Muscle of the anterior compartment of the leg that dorsiflexes the foot and extends the toes.

RICE

Initial remedy for muscle injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Shin splints

A term for several kinds of injury with pain in the crural region, often resulting from unaccustomed vigorous activity.

Tennis elbow

Inflammation at the attachment of extensor carpi muscles to the lateral epicondyle.

Anatomical compartments of the upper limbs

Include anterior and posterior compartments.

Anatomical compartments of the lower limbs

Include anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral compartments.

Gastrocnemius

Superficial muscle in the posterior compartment of the leg that plantar flexes the foot and flexes the toes.
