Adds cross-links to the natural nail

Equipment

All permanent tools used to perform nail services that are not implements

Lower-grit abrasive

180 or less grit : Quickly reduces any surface

Medium-grit abrasive

180 grit : Used to smooth and refine surfaces : Also used to shorten and shape natural nails

Fine-grit abrasive

240 grit or higher : Designed tro puff, polish, and remove very fine scratches

Disposable, throw out after each client

Service sets

A full set of implements needed to complete a full service

Manicure

A cosmetic treatment of the hands involving cutting, shaping, and often painting the nails, removal or the cuticles, and softening of the skin

Massage

Manipulation of soft tissues of the body

Nail creams

Barrier products designed to seal surface of skin around the nails and hold in moisture in the skin

Nail oils

Designed to be absorbed into the nail plate to increase flexibility and to soften and moisturize surrounding skin

Paraffin wax

Traps moisture in the skin white heat encourages skin pores to accept benefits

Protein hardener

Combination of clear polish and protein

Scope of practice

Regulations of what nail technicians are allowed to do (determined by state)

Oval nail

Similar to squoval with more rounded corners

Pointed nail

Tapered and longer than normal to lengthen and slender appearance of the hand

Round nail

Slightly tapered and usually extend just past the fingertip

Square nail

Completely straight free edge, no rounding outside edges

Squoval nail

Straight free edge rounded off at the corners. Less likely to break at corners that regular square
