What are the goals of design?
Establishing time and place, creating mood, facilitating the dramatic action, providing an environment that embodies the characters lives, telling the story, defining style, presenting a visual metaphor for the directors concept, establishing directors point of view
What is the designers process?
Collaboration, discussion, evolution
What are the principles in the designers process?
Careful readings of text, discussions with director, visual research to find images, storyboard, ground plan, scale model, production process
What is the focus?
Directing the audiences vision, orienting the audience within the space, using line, color, texture and scale, controlling the audience line of sight
What is the balance?
Symmetry, Asymmetry, Balance=stablilty, excessive symmetry= rigidity, imbalance=disorientation
What is proportion?
Refers to the scale of set elements in relation to each other and to the actors, scale may reflect reality, scale may distort the world, eyes are drawn to large objects onstage
What is rhythm?
Visual statements can repeat or shift abruptly, they can impart a sense of calm or frenzy
What is unity?
All the elements agree with eachother
What is line?
The visual world is constructed of lines, lines give definition, impart feeling, expressionist sets
What is mass?
refers to the shape, size, and weight of obrjects onstage, heavy objects create dense, oppressive space, light objects can create open space
What is texture?
Light reflecting on surfaces gives us an idea of texture onstage, sets often have fake textures, textures give a feel to environments
What is color?
Color affects us powerfully, color alters our sense of the performance space, warm and cold colors
What is Architectural or Natural space?
Architecture defines possibilities, demnsions
