Critical Race Theory (CRT)
A framework for examining how race, racialization, and racism center whiteness and marginalize racialized communities across all facets of society.
Racism
The belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all others and the right to dominance.
Whiteness
A social and cultural process that constructs norms and secures power for white individuals while marginalizing racialized communities.
Counter-narrative
An alternative story that challenges dominant narratives and exposes realities, especially related to social injustice.
Colonial continuities
Ongoing practices and ideologies stemming from colonial history that continue to shape social structures and power dynamics.
Essentialization
The process of reducing racial categories to fixed traits, which can lead to the oversimplification of complex identities.
Performativity of Whiteness
The ritual performances and behaviors that white individuals engage in when challenging racism but which may reinforce existing power structures.
Interlocking oppression
The concept that race, gender, class, and sexuality are interconnected and mutually reinforce systems of domination.
Socialization
The process by which individuals learn and internalize the norms and values of their society, which can include societal views on race and racism.
Anti-essentialism
The rejection of the idea that racialized peoples can be homogenized or viewed through a universal experience; it emphasizes individual and unique experiences.
