CBT
not only addresses problematic behaviours, but also the distorted cognitions underlying them
ex: smartphone sending message > not getting message right away can either be « they must be busy » or « they must not like me » = being sad or happy = behaving normal or erratic
cognitive restructuring
changing negative cognition into more realistic and and rational thought patterns - requires commitment from therapist and client > challenging people to identify when they’re in self defeating thoughts, getting people to consciously shift their thoughts into a healthy pattern
stress inoculation training
helps client put traumatic memories into perspective > might use forms of exposure therapy or roleplaying to give them a tool kit to work with in reality (anxiety, trauma, anger issues)
requires commitment from therapist and client
Mindfulness based cognitive therapy
combines mindfulness and meditation with standard cognitive behavioural therapy - these practices help facilitate skills
Decentering
occurs when one is able to step back from one’s normal consciousness and observe one’s thoughts more objectively - break perpetuating cycles (not wanting to hangout with people makes them lose friends = feeding into irrational beliefs)
