Distribution
Shows possible values and the frequency of each value or interval.
SOCS/CUSS
Shape, Outliers/Gaps, Center, Spread, unusual features, and Context.
Skewed Right
A distribution where the tail extends to the right.
Skewed Left
A distribution where the tail extends to the left.
Unimodal
Having one peak in a distribution.
Bimodal
Having two peaks in a distribution.
Multimodal
Having multiple peaks in a distribution.
Outliers
Values that lie far from the rest of the data.
Gaps
Gaps in data distribution.
Uniform
A distribution where all values occur with approximately equal frequency.
Bell Curve/Normal
A symmetrical, bell-shaped distribution.
Center
The 'typical value' of a dataset.
Mean
The average value in a dataset.
Median
The middle value in a dataset.
Histogram
A graph showing the distribution of numerical data.
Boxplot
A visual representation of data, showing the median, quartiles, and outliers.
Data Set/Stem Plot
A method of displaying data that shows the distribution and preserves individual data values.
Spread/Variability
How spread out the data is.
Range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset; sensitive to extreme outliers.
IQR (Interquartile Range)
The difference between the third quartile (Q3) and the first quartile (Q1); resistant to extremes.
Standard Deviation
How much each data value deviates from the mean on average.
Variance
The square of the standard deviation.
Percentile
The percentage of data values below a given value.
Z-Score (Standardized Value)
A measure of the distance from the mean in standard deviations.
Normal Models
Symmetric, unimodal distributions.
