Homeostasis
keeping internal conditions stable while adapting to changes in the external environment.
Dynamic Equilibrium
A state where internal conditions can vary somewhat, but only within the margins set by the body.
Intracellular Fluid
Fluid found within cells.
Extracellular Fluid
Fluid found outside of cells.
Interstitial Fluid
Extracellular fluid located within tissues.
Electrolytes
Ions capable of conducting electrical current in solution; includes anions and cations.
Osmolality
The solute concentration in a fluid; higher solute concentration means higher osmolality.
Crystalloids
Fluids containing water and electrolytes used to help regulate osmolality.
Colloids
Fluid products containing large, heavy molecules used to improve blood pressure or low protein levels.
Isotonic
Fluids with osmolality similar to blood.
Hypertonic
Fluids with osmolality greater than blood.
Hypotonic
Fluids with osmolality lower than blood.
