Autopsy
A thorough examination performed by a pathologist to determine cause and manner of death.
Clinical Autopsy
An examination performed on natural deaths in a hospital by a pathologist, based on consent from the deceased's next of kin.
Forensic Autopsy
An examination performed on suspicious, violent, or unknown causes of death by a forensic pathologist in a coroner’s or medical examiner's office.
Goals of Forensic Autopsy
To determine injuries or diseases that contributed to death, detect errors, identify the decedent, and collect trace evidence.
Forensic Pathologist
A medical doctor who specializes in determining the cause of death by examining a corpse.
Rigor Mortis
The postmortem stiffening of the muscles, which is important in estimating time of death.
Toxicology
The study of the effects of chemicals, including drugs and poisons, on the body, relevant in determining causes of death.
Y-Shaped Incision
The most practiced incision technique in the U.S. for autopsies that allows for concealment of dissection for viewing.
Chain of Custody
The process of maintaining and documenting the handling of evidence to ensure its integrity throughout an investigation.
Personal Effects Collection
The process of collecting and documenting personal belongings from the decedent for storage and eventual release.
