Part 1- determining solubility in an inorganic solvent
1) fill medium sized test tube halfway with water (water = inorganic solvent)
2) add small quantity of sodium chloride as INORGANIC SOLUTE to the test tube and MIX WELL
3) repeat using salicylic acid this time as ORGANIC SOLUTE
Part II- determining solubility in ORGANIC solvent
1) fill that same medium TEST TUBE with ETHANOL (organic solvent)
2) add sodium chloride and mix well (inorganic solute) - mix well
3) repeat with salicylic acid (organic solute)
Parts I and II
Physical properties
Part III switches to…
Chemical properties
Part III- testing for presence of C, N, and S (CARBON PART)
Carbon procedure = put small scoop of STARCH (organic) in a PORCELAIN EVAPORATING DISH
Heat over the hot plate and answer the following- does starch char?
Part III - nitrogen part
Place small amount of UREA (CO(NH2)2) (solid ) and MIX with EQUAL AMOUNT OF SODA LIME
Place test tube in a BEAKER
Heat carefully on hot plate
REMOVE BEAKER and note odor of gas evolved while testing the vapor with MOIST RED LITMUS PAPER at the MOUTH of the test tube
Never put ____ in the sink
SOLIDS- THROW THEM AWAYYYY
Part III - Sulfur part
1) 5 mL of EGG ALBUMIN solution and 2 mL of SODIUM HYDROXIDE in a test tube
2) place test tube in WATER BATH and let solution BOIL FOR A MINUTE
3) Cool the solution, add 3 drops of 5% lead acetate into the test tube
Part IV- Conductivity experiment
Back to PHYSICAL PROPERTY (in this case, electrical conductivity) of organic and inorganic compounds
1) watch lab instructor to see how to use the CONDUCTIVITY APPARATUS
3) use the apparatus to observe the DIFFERENCES IN CONDUCTIVITY of…
distilled water
NaCl (solid)
NaCl (aq)
Methanol
salycilic acid in methanol
Distilled water should be a ….
POOR CONDUCTOR ( no ions or substances that can conduct electricity well)
Electrolyte
Solution that conducts electricity due to MOBILE ions (electrically charged particles that form when SALTS and INORGANIC COMPOUNDS dissociate)
Miscible
Liquids coming together UNIFORMLY
Immiscible
Liquids that DO NOT MIX/COME TOGETHER
Solubility is dependent on….
The nature of solutes and solvents (like dissolves like- e.g: polar solvents dissolve polar substances)
Temperature (higher temp= better solubility)
Pressure
