MR. GRAEA

A mnemonic for the seven characteristics of living things: Made of cells, Respond to stimuli, Grow and develop, Reproduce, Acquire materials and energy, Excrete waste, and Adapt.

Cell

The basic unit of life and the smallest unit that can carry out all life processes, referred to as the building blocks of life.

Unicellular Organisms

Organisms made up of only one single cell that carries out all the functions of life, such as Amoeba, Euglena, Paramecium, and bacteria.

Multicellular Organisms

Organisms made up of more than one cell, where each cell performs a specific job and works together to sustain the life of the organism, such as humans, birds, fish, trees, and spiders.

Stimulus

Any internal or external environmental change that triggers a reaction, such as light, temperature, touch, sound, gravity, or chemical.

Homeostasis

The internal balance that an organism maintains by taking action in response to environmental stimuli.

Adaptations

Inherited characteristics—which may be structural, behavioural, or physiological—that increase an organism's chances of survival.
