What are isomerisms?
2 molecules that have the same molecular formula but the atoms are arranged differently
What are the 2 different types of isomers?
Structural and stereoisomers
What are the different types of structural isomers?
chain isomers - C skeleton arranged differently = similar chemical properties but different physical properties (e.g. boiling point) as there is a change to the molecules shape
Positional isomers - functional groups / chains attached to different Cs which might = different physical and chemical properties
Functional group isomers - atoms arranged into different functional groups = very different physical and chemical properties
How can atoms being able to rotate around a C-C bond cause molecules that have displayed formulas that look different but they aren’t isomers?
When naming these molecules they will have the same name so are the same molecule. Also everything is still bonded to the same atoms so they are the same molecules
