Unicellular yeast (warmer environments).
Multicellular mold (colder environments).

Domain Eukarya; eukaryotic cells.
How mold acquires nutrients
Secretes extracellular enzymes to decompose organic waste, absorbs nutrients through hyphae (unique to fungi).
Saprobe
Organism that lives off dead/decaying organic material.
Hyphae
Long, branching filamentous structures; absorb nutrients from environment.
Mycelium
A collection or mass of hyphae.
Sporangium, what is it & location?
A spore-bearing structure.
Located @ the ends/tips of hyphae.
Mold spores
Released from sporangia, disseminated through air for reproduction;
examples: conidia, zygospores.
What happens when a spore lands and grows
Becomes new hyphae → new mold.
Non-septated hyphae
One long cell, multiple nuclei, no septum.
Septated hyphae
Multiple cells, single nucleus each, separated by septum.
Yeast commercial uses
Alcohol and bread-making industries.
Budding
Asexual yeast reproduction; small portion of parent cell pinches/buds off to form daughter cell.
