« Il m'avait aussitôt rendu les vicissitudes de la vie indifférentes, ses désastres inoffensifs, sa brièveté illusoire, de la même façon qu'opère l'amour, en me remplissant d'une essence précieuse : ou plutôt cette essence n'était pas en moi, elle était moi. »

“It had instantly rendered life's vicissitudes indifferent to me, its disasters harmless, its brevity illusory, in the same way that love operates, by filling me with a precious essence: or rather, this essence was not in me, it was me” (009). The narrator’s own being momentarily becoming identical with a timeless, nourishing essence of experience that exists outside ordinary time and contingency. In TR, P elaborates this explicitly: involuntary memory reveals an "extra-temporal being" that alone can grasp the Essence beyond time's flux.

l’essence précieuse

precious essence: the timeless, nourishing “essence” of experience that becomes the true self: "elle était moi." GD explicitly links and reinterprets MP's "essence" to his own concept of the "Idea" in Proust and Signs, making the MP’s ‘essence’ one of the most direct and influential philosophical appropriations of the madeleine episode and related passages.

“It's clear that the truth I seek isn't in it, but in me.” In Deleuze's reading, the essence/perspective constitutes the self and its world – Leibnitz’s monad, with each essence being a unique viewpoint while simultaneously expressing the whole. When the narrator becomes identical with the essence – "it was me" – it is a reconstitution of the empirical self into a differential viewpoint.

“Grave uncertainty, every time the spirit senses itself exceeded by itself; when he, the searcher, is altogether the obscure country where he must seek and where all his baggage (intellectual equipment, accumulated learning, methods) will be of no use to him.” This is one of the most profound lines in the entire Recherche. It captures the profound disorientation the narrator experiences when involuntary memory suddenly resurfaces. The intellect (the “chercheur”) finds itself helpless because it is both the seeker and the hidden territory it is trying to explore. (009)

But, when nothing of the ancient past remains, after the death of people, after the destruction of things, only, more fragile but more enduring, more immaterial, more persistent, more faithful, do scent and taste remain for a long time, like souls, to remember, to wait, to hope, upon the ruin of all else, to bear unflinchingly, on their almost impalpable droplet, the immense edifice of memory. Et tout d'un coup le souvenir m'est apparu. Ce goût c'était celui du petit morceau de madeleine que le dimanche matin à Combray (parce que ce jour-là je ne sortais pas avant l'heure de la messe), quand j'allais lui dire bonjour dans sa chambre, ma tante Léonie m'offrait après l'avoir trempé dans son infusion de thé ou de tilleul.

And suddenly the memory came back to me. That taste was that of the little piece of madeleine that on Sunday mornings in Combray (because on that day I didn't go out before mass), when I went to say hello to her in her room, my aunt Léonie would offer me after dipping it in her tea or linden infusion.
