Lateral reading
A method to assess a source’s credibility by checking it against other sources and outside context rather than relying on the source alone.
OPCVL
Origin, Purpose, Content, Value, Limitations; a framework for evaluating a source.
PEAL
Point, Evidence, Analysis, Link; a paragraph structure for developing an argument.
Analyze
To break down content into its essential elements to understand its structure and meaning.
Examine
To consider a claim or concept to uncover assumptions and relationships.
Evaluate/Assess
To judge the strengths and weaknesses of a subject or source.
Compare & Contrast
To identify and discuss the similarities and differences between two or more things.
To What Extent
To indicate the degree to which one opinion is more valid or applicable than another.
Discuss
To provide a considered, balanced review of a subject.
Justify
To provide valid reasons to support a claim or opinion.
Value (of a source)
The usefulness or relevance of a source, often related to its time period and purpose.
Limitation
A restriction or bias in a source, such as the creator’s perspective or scope.

Applying Origin, Purpose, Content, Value, and Limitations to evaluate a source's credibility and usefulness.
Paper 1 & Paper 3 (HL1)
The IB History HL1 examination papers that are covered in the course.
Internal Assessment (IA)
A 2,200-word historical investigation required for SL and HL, including analysis of two sources (400–500 words), topic investigation (1,100–1,300 words), and a reflection (400–500 words); includes a bibliography and is compulsory.
