Central Nervous System
Consists of the brain and spinal cord, acting as the body's primary command center for processing information.
Autonomic Nervous System
A subdivision of the PNS that automatically regulates involuntary body functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing.
Sympathetic Nervous System
The branch of the autonomic nervous system that activates the "fight-or-flight" response, accelerating heart rate and preparing the body for stress or action.
Peripheral Nervous System
Connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body, transmitting sensory and motor signals out to the limbs and organs.
Somatic Nervous System
A subdivision of the PNS that controls voluntary muscle movements and transmits sensory information to the CNS.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The branch of the autonomic nervous system that activates the "rest-and-digest" response, calming the body down and conserving energy.
