Intermolecular Forces
Forces that hold molecules of a substance together.
Van der Waals' Forces
Also known as London dispersion forces; they are the weakest intermolecular forces.
London Dispersion Forces
A type of Van der Waals' force caused by random movement of electrons that create temporary dipoles.
Dipole-Dipole Forces
Attractions between polar molecules that have opposite partial charges.
Hydrogen Bonds
A strong type of dipole-dipole interaction occurring in molecules containing H bonded to N, O, or F.
Characteristics of Stronger IMFs
Include longer evaporation times, higher boiling/melting points, and higher surface tension.
