Maxwell's equations
A set of four fundamental equations that describe how electric and magnetic fields interact and propagate.
Uniform Plane Wave
A wave where the electric field (E) and magnetic field (H) are uniform along the wave propagation direction.
Phase Velocity (up)
The speed at which a wave phase travels in a medium, given by the formula up = ω/k.
Complex Permittivity (ε')
A measure of how an electric field affects, and is affected by, a dielectric medium, including both storage and loss.
Time-harmonic Fields
Fields that vary sinusoidally with time, typically expressed in complex exponential form.
Intrinsic Impedance (η)
A property of the medium that relates the electric field (E) to the magnetic field (H) in a wave, defined by η = √(μ/ε).
Wavelength (λ)
The distance over which the wave's shape repeats, inversely proportional to frequency.
Radiating Antenna
An antenna that emits electromagnetic waves into the surrounding space.
Directional Relation Between E and H
In a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) wave, the relationship between the direction of the electric field (E), magnetic field (H), and wave vector (k).
Scalar Helmholtz Equation
Three separable equations derived from Maxwell's equations for scalar fields in a source-free region.
Lossless Media
A medium in which electromagnetic waves can propagate without suffering attenuation.
Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) Wave
A wave in which the oscillating electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields are perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.
Spherical Wavefront
A wavefront that is expanding spherically from a point source, characterized by varying phase at different angles.
Ionosphere
A region of the Earth's upper atmosphere that plays a crucial role in radio wave propagation.
