Solid
Particles are tightly packed and do not move around.
Liquid
Particles are close together, vibrate, move, and slide past each other.
Gas
Particles are very separated, vibrating and moving quickly.
Condensation
The process where gas turns into liquid, such as dew on grass.
Evaporation
The process where liquid turns into gas, as seen when puddles disappear.
Freezing Point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid, e.g., water to ice.
Sublimation
A change of state from solid to gas without passing through the liquid state.
Deposition
A change of state from gas to solid, the reverse of sublimation.
Matter
Anything that has volume (takes up space) and has mass.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, often measured by weight.
Volume
The three-dimensional (3D) space an object takes up.
Density
Mass of an object compared to its volume; calculated as mass divided by volume.
Graduated Cylinder
An instrument used to measure the volume of an object by water displacement.
Physical Property
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
Chemical Property
A characteristic observed when matter changes into a new or different substance.
