What do waves transfer?
Energy
How many types of waves are there?
2
Name the 2 types of waves.
Transverse and longitude
What is a Transverse wave?
A transverse wave is a wave where the particles vibrate at right angles (perpendicular) to the direction the wave is travelling.
Give and example of a transverse wave.
Light waves
Rope waves
Water waves
What is a longitudinal wave?
A longitudinal wave is a wave where the particles or vibrations move back and forth in the exact same direction that the wave it traveling.
Give an example of a longitudinal wave.
Sound waves
Ultrasound
What’s the difference between longitudinal waves and transverse waves?
In transverse waves, particles move at right angles (90°) to the direction of the wave, while longitudinal waves particles vibrate back-and-forth in the same direction of the wave.
What’s meant by the term frequency?
The number of waves that pass a point (crest) every second.
What’s meant by the amplitude of a wave?
The distance from the middle of a wave to either the very top or bottom of the wave.
What is meant by the wavelength of a wave?
The distance between one crest (point) and the crest (point) after.
What’s the symbol and the unit for frequency?
Symbol-f
Unit- herz
Symbol for herz-Hz
What’s the symbol and unit for wavelength?
Symbol- the Latin letter ለ
Unit- meters
Symbol for meters- m
What’s the symbol and unit for speed?
Symbol-v
Unit-meters per second
Symbol for meters per second-m/s
Write down the equation that links frequency, velocity and wavelength.
V=fለ
How do you find frequency?
f=V/ለ
How do you find the speed?
ለ=V/f
