Independent variable
- Changed to test the prediction ( hypothesis )
- Plotted on the X axis
Dependent variable
- Factor that changed in response to the independent variable
- Plotted on the Y axis
what is the goal of a controlled experiment ?
- to test the impact of a specific factors ( Independent Variable) to prove the outcome ( Dependent Variable).
Why might a scientist repeat work already done by others?
- to verify the results. ( PROVE, DISAPPROVE, IMPROVE)
What is the difference between a control and experimental group?
- Control group: serves as a comparison
- Experimental group: factor that affects the outcome
What are the 3 types of graphs mentioned ?
- Bar graph
- Line graph
- Pie chart/ circle graph
The Bar graph :
- Good at comparing quantities
- Information that was obtained by counting
- shows multiple sets of data in the same graph
The Line graph :
- Good at showing trends
- What's a trend : how something changes over time
- Shows multiple sets of data on the same graph
The circle graph / Pie chart :
- Good at showing proportions of a whole value
- How a fixed quantity is broken down
List the 5 steps to our scientific method ?
Please, Have, Extra, Credit, Teacher
-Problem
- Hypothesis
- Experiment
- Conclusion
- Theory/ Law
List 5 abiotic factors and 5 biotic factors :
Abiotic: Food, Water, Soil, Temperature, Wind
Biotic : Humans, Animals, Plants, Insects, Bacteria
Why is science uncertain and changeable ?
- Because it's constantly being tested + discovered
Why is environmental science an integrated science ?
- Because there are many other fields of science such as
Biology, ecology, Chemistry, Oceanography, etc.
What tools CAN enhance scientist's senses ?
- microscope
- graduated cylinder
- beaker
what tools CAN'T help enhance scientists senses?
- scientific tools
Geiger counter :
- is a radioactive detector
List 3 challenges for scientist today? ( IMPORTANT) + ( IN ORDER)
1. Feeding a hungry world
2. Curing / preventing the spread diseases
3. Developing new energy sources
Abiotic factor :
A nonliving part of the environment
Biotic factor :
A living part of the environment
Control :
An experimental situation in which the variable being tested is missing
Environment :
Everything that surrounds a particular organism
Hypothesis :
A possible explanation for a set of observations
Variable :
Any factor that affects the outcome of an experiment
Grand Canyon story : When
In the early 1900's
What animals were involved :
- Lions
- Coyotes
- Wolves
- Deers
Where :
Arizona
Why were the people rewarded :
- because those animals were dangerous to humans
The chain of events :
1. They were hunted and killed
2. After 15 years their population was almost completely gone.
3. Then the deer population grew 25 times.
4. But there was soon not enough food for them ( they ate everything)
5. 60,000 dears died the next year
6. The plant growth still has not fully recovered
