Medea 2 - Ancient Greek GCSE translation

ἂν μὲν τάδ᾽ ἡμῖν ἐκπονουμέναισιν εὖ πόσις ξυνοικῇ

and if our husband lives well with us as we work hard at these things

μὴ βίᾳ φέρων ζυγόν,

enduring the yoke without violence

ζηλωτὸς αἰών

it is an enviable life

 εἰ δὲ μή, θανεῖν χρεών.

but if not, it is necessary to die.

ἀνὴρ δ᾽, ὅταν τοῖς ἔνδον ἄχθηται ξυνών,

but a man, whenever he is fed up with living with those at home

ἔξω μολὼν ἔπαυσε καρδίαν ἄσης  

by going outside he stops the nausea of his heart

[ἢ πρὸς φίλον τιν᾽ ἢ πρὸς ἥλικα τραπείς]:

turning whether towards a certain friend or a contemporary

ἡμῖν δ᾽ ἀνάγκη πρὸς μίαν ψυχὴν βλέπειν.

but for us it is inevitable to depend on one person alone

λέγουσι δ᾽ ἡμᾶς ὡς ἀκίνδυνον βίον ζῶμεν κατ᾽ οἴκους

and they say that we live a life free from danger at home

οἱ δὲ μάρνανται δορί, κακῶς φρονοῦντες:

but they fight with a spear thinking foolishly

 ὡς τρὶς ἂν παρ᾽ ἀσπίδα στῆναι θέλοιμ᾽ ἂν μᾶλλον ἢ τεκεῖν ἅπαξ.

for I would wish to stand three times next to a shield rather than to give birth once.
