Definition of Interpersonal Communication
The production (message) and processing (understanding) of verbal and nonverbal messages between 2 or less people
What is the Linear Model of communication?
A one-way model where a sender sends a message to a receiver. but too simple because it ignores feedback + noise
Feedback
A response that says communication was received correctly/incorrectly. someone is both a sender and receiver bc of feedback.
Noise
interfering with communication. 4 types: physical, psychological, physiological, semantic.
What is the transactional model of communication?
Communication is 2 ways. Both people are senders and receivers at the same time and communication is influenced by feedback, context, environment.
4 elements that define interpersonal communication
intentionality (conscious), shared meaning, transmission (send message we want to communicate), bond
What are the 3 axioms of communication?
(1) you cannot not communicate (2) every connection has a content and relationship component (3) punctuation determines meaning
What is the situational approach?
kinds of communication in terms of situation/context it takes place. 5 types: intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public, mass
Developmental approach
people make predictions abt communication behavior as they get to know someone.
Sources of data for prediction-making
cultural level data (norms), sociological level data (college students), psychological level data (extraverted)
4 basic feature of language
phonemes (sounds in words), syntax (arranging words), semantics (meaning of words), pragmatics (purpose/how words are used like a ?)

Digital and Analogic
Digital Langauge
language is made of arbitrary symbols (nonsense) that follow rules.
Analogic language
Language that is thing-like or resembles what it represents.

Quantity (give only amount of info needed), Quality (truth), Relation (relevant), Manner (clear and organized)
