TBI Definition
Traumatic Brain Injury is an injury that occurs when there is sudden, physical trauma to the brain from external force.
Biological Effects of TBI
Cognitive deficits, biological impairments, and behavioural changes.
Social Effects of TBI
Social isolation, communication difficulties, and issues with overall social functioning.
Psychological Effects of TBI
Depression, personality changes, and impairments in social skills and coping mechanisms.
How can you prevent CTE?
Wearing appropriate safety gear, reducing the number of hits to the head, and seeking proper medical care for any head injuries
What is a concussion?
An acquired brain injury in which the brain bounces inside the skull due to physical trauma from an external force that disrupts regular brain functions.
What is Aphasia?
An acquired language disorder resulting from damage to the language processing centres of the brain.
What are the 2 different Aphasia’s?
Wernicke’s Aphasia and Broca’s Aphasia.
What is Wernicke’s Aphasia?
An acquired language disorder that affects the ability to understand and produce meaningful speech, resulting in fluent but non-meaningful speech.
What is Broca’s Aphasia?
An acquired language disorder that primarily affects speech production, which results in non-fluent speech.
Where is Wernicke’s Aphasia and Broca’s Aphasia located?
Wernicke’s Aphasia is located in the left temporal lobe, while Broca’s Aphasia is located in the left frontal lobe.
What is neuroplasticity?
The ability of neural networks in the brain to change as a result of experience.
What is rerouting?
When healthy neurons create alternative neural pathways when existing connections are lost.
What is sprouting?
When existing neurons form new axon terminals and dendrites to allow new connections to be made.
What is a neurological disorder?
Any disorder of the nervous system, including of the brain, spinal cord, or nerves.
