Types of White Blood Cells

Neutrophils

• most numbers WBC (50-70%)

• multi lobed nucleus

• goes to site of inflammation

• uses phagocytes to engulf bacteria

Eosinophils

• 2-4% of WBC

• 2 lobed nucleus

• use enzymes to digest parasitic worms

Basophils

• rarest WBC (less than 1%)

• Release histamine: an inflammatory chemical that attracts other WBC to site of infection

Lymphocytes

• 25% of WBC

• 2nd most popular one

• large nucleus

• found in lymph nodes

• 2 types: T and B celll

Monocytes

• 3-8% of WBC

• largest WBC

• v-shaped nucleus

• become macrophages: phagocytes that engulf viruses and other phaogens
