What is active immunity and how is it gained?
Active immunity is defence against a pathogen by antibody production in the body. It is gained after an infection by a pathogen or by vaccination.

An altered or harmless form of a pathogen (containing antigens) is introduced into the body, triggering an immune response by lymphocytes to produce complementary antibodies and memory cells that provide long-term immunity.
What is passive immunity and why is it important for infants?
Passive immunity is short-term defence against a pathogen by antibodies acquired from another individual (memory cells are not produced). It is important for infants because they cannot produce their own antibodies and rely on antibodies from maternal breast milk.
