What is stress?

A load or force put on a piece of material or structure

What is strain?

The effect that the load will have on material or structure

What is compressive stress?

a force that pushes material together, causing it to crush or buckle.

What is tensile stress?

Where the load or force exerted tries to pull the material apart

Hogging

Occurs when there is more weight on each side of vessel

Sagging

Occurs when cargo is loaded into the midship

If mid ship draft is greater than mean draft, the vessel is;

Hogging

If mid ship draft is less than mean draft, vessel is;

Sagging

Torsion

When two forces are moving in opposite directions, tend to twist structure

Shear stress

When two opposite forces act parallel to each other and try to slide parts of a material past one another, this creates shear stress
