Dukkha
The Truth that all life is unsatisfactoriness. It is the 1st noble truth
Samudaya
The Truth of where unsatisfactoriness comes from- the 2nd noble truth.
Nirodha
The truth of how to end unsatisfactoriness- the 3rd noble truth
Magga
The truth of the path to end unsatisfactoriness. Also known as the middle way. It is the 4th noble truth
8-fold path
This is the path of the middle way (magga). It is 8 things we must try to have and do in order to live a life in the middle way that overcomes dukka
Right Speech
One step on the 8-fold path. We must use our speech for good; not gossiping or lying, but standing up for others without a voice of their own
Right Action
A step on the 8-fold path. We must make sure our actions are positive; we should protest injustice, sign petitions to stop cruelty, stand up for others. We must not be bullies, hurting others with our actions.
Right Livelihood
A step on the 8-fold path. This means having the right job that is a force for good and not bad. It means not being a butcher or someone who slaughters animals (Buddhists are often vegetarian), but being a social worker, police officer or doctor- someone who helps others!
Hedonism
A lifestyle of overindulgence. The Buddha lived this type of life when he was born.
Asceticism
A lifestyle of deprivation. The Buddha tried this lifestyle for 6 years, but realised it did no thelp him reach enlightenment!
3 poisons
Ignorance, hatred and greed. These are the 3 things which keep us in a state of discontent and unsatisfactoriness (dukkha)
