The facts, observations, or descriptions the author chooses to include (or leave out).
Diction
The author’s word choice. It includes how formal, emotional, or specific the language is. Diction helps create the tone and show the writer’s attitude.
Imagery
Words that appeal to the senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—to help readers imagine what’s happening or feel a certain way.
Syntax
The way words and phrases are arranged in sentences. Sentence length, punctuation, and structure affect rhythm, clarity, and tone.
Figurative Language
Language that goes beyond the literal meaning to create special effects or deeper ideas—like metaphor, simile, and personification.
Tone
The author’s attitude toward the subject or audience, revealed through diction, detail, imagery, and syntax.
Mood
The overall emotional feeling or atmosphere a text creates for the reader.
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two unlike things to express an abstract idea or reveal meaning.
Simile
A comparison between two unlike things using connecting words such as like or as.
Personification
Giving human qualities or emotions to nonhuman objects or ideas.
Allusion
A reference to a well-known person, place, event, or work used to enrich meaning or create resonance.
Symbol
A concrete object, person, or event that represents an abstract idea or larger concept.
Allegory
A narrative in which characters, settings, and events represent broader moral, political, or spiritual meanings.
Irony
A contrast between appearance and reality or between expectation and outcome that reveals complexity or insight.
Verbal Irony
When a speaker’s words convey a meaning opposite to their literal sense.
Situational Irony
When an outcome or event directly contradicts expectations.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience understands something that a character does not, creating tension or humor.
Paradox
A statement that appears self-contradictory or illogical but reveals a deeper truth or insight upon reflection.
