Classification

The organization of living organisms into different groups to identify them and study their lifecycles, relationships with the environment, and conservation.

Morphology

The basis of classification where organisms are grouped according to their skeleton structure and body.

Ecology

The basis of classification where organisms are divided into groups based on the environment or habitat they live in.

Gene sequence

The most accurate and reliable basis of classification with zero chance of error.

Kingdom

The first and highest level in the levels of organisation.

Phylum

The second level in the hierarchy of classification, following Kingdom.

Levels of Organisation

The hierarchical structure of classification: 1. Kingdom, 2. Phylum, 3. Class, 4. Order, 5. Family, 6. Genus, 7. Species.

Binomial System

A scientific 2 word naming system used to avoid confusion from regional names, where the first word is the Genus and the second word is the species.

Genus

The first word in a binomial name that must always start with a capital letter.

Species

The second word in a binomial name, where all letters must be small and organisms share the same features.

Binomial System Rules

The first letter of the Genus is capital, all letters of the species are small, and the name must be written in italics or underlined.

Helicobacter pylori

The scientific binomial name for a bacterium.

Felis domestica

The scientific binomial name for a cat.

Naja naja

The scientific binomial name for a cobra.

Homo sapien

The scientific binomial name for a human.
