9-Line Close Air Support (CAS) Brief and Brevity Codes

Vocabulary terms and standard brevity codes for the 9-Line Close Air Support brief according to JP 3-09.3.

Line 1 (9-Line CAS Brief)

IP/BP - Starting point (Initial Point/IP) or wheel point (Battle Position/BP) to target.

Line 2 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Heading / Offset - Heading from the IP and left/right offset.

Line 3 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Distance - Distance from IP to target in NM, or BP to target in meters.

Line 4 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Target Elevation - Altitude of the target in feet MSL (Mandatory read-back line).

Line 5 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Target Description - Description of the target.

Line 6 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Target Location - Latitude/longitude, grid coordinates, offset, or visual location (Mandatory read-back line).

Line 7 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Type Mark / Code - Type of marking (WP, laser, IR) plus actual code.

Line 8 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Friendlies / Marked by - Position of friendlies given by cardinal direction + distance in meters, and marking method.

Line 9 (9-Line CAS Brief)

Egress - Cardinal direction and/or egress control point.

Brevity word indicating the target is visually sighted.

NO JOY

Brevity word indicating the target is NOT visually sighted.

CONTACT

Brevity word indicating landmark or reference point seen, but not the target.

IN

Brevity word indicating aircraft is on final approach to the target.

OFF

Brevity word indicating aircraft is maneuvering away from the target.

CLEARED HOT

Brevity word authorizing aircraft to release ordnance / fire.

Brevity word ordering immediate cancellation of the attack.

CHECK FIRE

Brevity word commanding to cease fire / suspend firing.

DANGER CLOSE

Brevity word indicating target is in close proximity to friendly forces.
