Figurative Language
The words used are not meant to be taken literally
Metaphor
not literal; combines or compares things that cannot really be the same
Verbal Irony
not literal; implies the opposite of what is said
Hyperbole
not literal; impossible exaggeration
Symbolism
the literal thing suggest a much bigger meaning
Juxtaposition
putting 2 ideas next to each other to make a point out of their differences (or similarities)
Imagery
descriptions that strongly appeal to the senses in order to create a clear picture/feeling in the readers mind
Flashback
the story briefly goes back in time to provide background details
Mythologize
to exaggerate the details of an event into epic proportions
Magical Realism
magical events occurring in an otherwise realistic world
Mise En Scene
very thoughtful placement of items (scenery, objects, costumes) within a scene to send subtle messages about characters or themes (similar to but more meaningful than ¨Easter eggs¨)
Parallelism
A pattern made by repeating the kinds of words used

the same exact important words or phrases used over again for emphasis
