3 aims of punishment
retribution - punishment reflecting the severity of the crime (eye for an eye, but christians really don’t take this litteraly, buddhists say uneccessary suffering
deterrence- stops re offenders , they oppose public punishment because its humiliating (dukkha)
reformation- favour reform, encourages not to take revenge but show christian agape,
attidudes to suffering
christians have a duty to help those who suffer
wrong to blame god for suffering, free will, guidance on how to use our free will, teachings reduce suffering if follooed,
buddhists overcome suffering and achieve enlightenment (suffering is inevitable), follow eightfold path, avoid causing others suffering
hellen keller- overcoming her disablity and didn’t let it control her, instead she used her empathy to alleviate suffering for others
treatment of criminals
christians support prison for serious crime , buddhists believe prison serves as time for rehabilitation
corporal- christians dont support this neither buddhists
community servicep good detterence buddhists approve as its rehabilitation, and does no harm to offender
forgiveness

buddhists- let go of anger and resentment, you will suffer yourself if you hold onto this resent, they’ll be punished regardless by the principal of kamma
