retribution - punishment reflecting the severity of the crime (eye for an eye, but christians really don’t take this litteraly, buddhists say uneccessary suffering

deterrence- stops re offenders , they oppose public punishment because its humiliating (dukkha)

reformation- favour reform, encourages not to take revenge but show christian agape,

buddhists overcome suffering and achieve enlightenment (suffering is inevitable), follow eightfold path, avoid causing others suffering
