FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Transfers files between systems using tcp/20 for active mode data and tcp/21 for control; authenticates with username and password.
SSH (Secure Shell)
An encrypted communication link acting similarly to Telnet, operating over tcp/22.
Telnet (Telecommunication Network)
A protocol for remote console access to devices over tcp/23; uses in-the-clear communication, which is not ideal for production systems.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
Used for server-to-server email transfer and sending mail from devices to servers over tcp/25.
DNS (Domain Name System)
Critical resources that convert names to IP addresses over udp/53.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
Automated configuration of IP addresses and subnet masks using udp/67 and udp/68; requires a server or integrated router.
DHCP reservation
A method to assign IP addresses by MAC address in the DHCP server to manage them from a single location.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
Protocol for communication in browsers and other applications; can be in the clear or encrypted.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
Basic mail transfer functionality used to receive emails from a server over tcp/110.
IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol v4)
Includes email inbox management from multiple clients when receiving email over tcp/143.
SMB (Server Message Block)
Protocol used by Microsoft Windows for file and printer sharing, also known as CIFS (Common Internet File System).
NetBIOS over TCP/IP Ports
Includes udp/137 for name services (nbname), tcp/139 for session service (nbsession), and tcp/445 for direct NetBIOS-less communication.
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
Protocol operating on tcp/389 used to store and retrieve information in network directories like Microsoft Active Directory.
RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
Allows sharing a desktop or application from a remote location over tcp/3389.
IEEE Wireless Standards
Set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11 committee, often referenced by generations such as Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 7.
802.11ac / 802.11ax / 802.11be
The standards corresponding to Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6/6E (extended), and Wi-Fi 7 respectively.
Bluetooth
Short-range wireless technology (approx. 10 meters) using the 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band.
RFID (Radio-frequency identification)
Technology using radio energy transmitted to a tag to power it and transmit an ID back; used for access badges and tracking.
NFC (Near field communication)
Two-way wireless communication building on RFID; used for payment systems, access tokens, and Bluetooth pairing bootstrap.
