Thesis Point 1 -Their commitment to their History
Commitment to collective ownership - Creation of NHS and nationalised industries such as coal, airways. All under Clement Atlee with the Post War Consensus
Anti thesis 1 -Blair moved the party from its socialist roots
Removed Clause 4 from the party manifesto- collective ownership. Reduced the influence of trade unions. Introduced private public partnerships. Centralised power to himself .Influenced by Thatcher and Neoliberalism Mixed economy
Thesis point 2 - the socialist push of Jeremy Corbyn from 2015-2020
2017 Manifesto : priotiiesed nationalising industry increase public spending, free education. Mostly funded by members/trade unions.
Anti thesis point 2 - Keir Starmer = Moderation
Stopped tax and spend initiative. Taxes on elderly and farmers (Winter fuel allowance). But also moderate due to nationalising steel works. Pragmatic moves not bound by ideology
Thesis Point 3 : Labour still has socialist ideas redistribution
remains committed to addressing inequality through progressive taxation, universal healthcare, and strong public services.. Starmer has promised to abolish tax loopholes, invest in the NHS, and raise minimum wages
Anti Thesis Point 3 : Social democracy is distinct from socialism
. By focusing on reforming rather than replacing capitalism, Labour under leaders like Blair and Starmer may better be described as progressive liberals or centrists, rather than socialists. In this view, the party’s commitment to regulated capitalism and private enterprise marks a clear departure from its original socialist identity.
