What is interphase in the cell cycle?
The phase of the cell cycle in which the cell is preparing for division.
What occurs during mitosis?
The division of a nucleus into 2 genetically identical nuclei.
What is cytokinesis?
The division of the cytoplasm and organelles to produce 2 genetically identical daughter cells.
What happens during the G1 phase of interphase?
Formation of mRNA takes place, which is then used for making proteins and enzymes.
What is replicated during the S phase of interphase?
DNA is replicated, where unwinding of DNA strands takes place, and each template makes its own complementary strand.
What is the main purpose of the G2 phase?
To check and correct errors in the DNA and to form spindle fibers and microtubes.
What is karyokinesis?
The division of the nucleus resulting in the formation of 2 daughter nuclei in one cell.
Who described karyokinesis in animal cells?
Walter Flemming.
List the steps of mitosis in order.
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.
What must occur for a cell to prepare for division?
All cellular contents, including DNA and organelles, must be duplicated.
