Problem 1: Everything is dark
Is the microscope plugged in?
Is the power switch on?
Is the objective lens snapped into position?
Is the voltage control turned up?
Is the iris diaphragm open?
Problem 2: You can't find anything on low power
Centre the coverslip of the slide under the objective lens.
Focus up and down with the coarse adjustment knob.
try focussing on the edge of the coverslip and then scanning across
Problem 3: When you moved to a higher power, everything disappeared.
use fine focus knob only. Turn it one way very slowly, and if nothing comes into focus, then turn it the other way.
If you still can’t see anything, return to the previous objective.
Locate the organism and make sure to centre it in the field of view.
Switch to the higher power and use only the fine focus.
Problem 4: The image is blurry and/or you see dark specs everywhere
If you rotate the ocular, do the specs move? If so, clean the ocular lens using lens cleaner and Kimwipes (or rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab).
If you switch objectives, is it less blurry? If so, then the objective may be dirty – clean it with lens cleaner and Kimwipes
If the image is blurry under all objectives, then the slide may be dirty. clean it with kimwipes
