Quantitative Research
A systematic process for obtaining numerical information about the world.
Continuous Variable
A kind of variable that can take an infinite number on the value that can occur within a population.
Ordinal Variable
A variable that has two or more categories which can be ranked.
Nominal Variable
A variable type used for categories without a natural rank, such as Blood Type.
Causal-Comparative Research
A kind of quantitative research that aims to infer the causes of a phenomenon which has already occurred.
Objectives
A characteristic of quantitative research describing how the study is not based on guesswork.
Research Gap
An issue that has not been fully addressed by previous studies.
Research Questions
The specific concerns related to a research problem that a study intends to answer.
Scope
The part of the paper that describes the coverage of the study.
Significance of the Study
The section that details the contribution or benefit that the study provides to different people, such as practical, methodological, or theoretical benefits.
Background of the Study
A section that introduces important facets that establish the general context where the study revolves.
Literature Search
The stage of the literature review in which the researcher systematically looks for and selects reference materials relevant to the study.
Boolean searching strategies
The use of certain keywords like "AND", "OR", and "NOT" to limit and focus an online search.
MLA Style
The citation style typically used for humanities and the arts.
Summarizing
A notetaking form that involves condensing a lengthy piece of source material while retaining the main idea in a shorter length than the original text.
Paraphrasing
A notetaking form that refers to the rewording of ideas from the original text in a more detailed way.
Cohesive Devices
Tools used in writing the literature review to link the works that will be cited.
Conceptual Framework
A framework developed prior to the conduct of the study that involves concepts applying specifically to the current study and may combine different theories into one.
Operational Definition
A type of definition generally made specifically for the study being conducted.
Conceptual Definition
A type of definition oftentimes used by scholars that requires citation when used.
Level 2 Plagiarism
Lifting large portions of a research work (up to 50%) without citing the source.
Level 3 Plagiarism
A level of plagiarism that involves incorrectly citing a certain source and copying heavily from it.
Micro level synthesis
A process involving the consolidation of ideas to explain a concept.
APA Reference Format
A citation style that follows the format: Author, Last Name Initial. (Year). Title. Journal, Volume(Issue), pages.
Title Length Rule
The guideline stating a research title should not be longer than 15 substantive words.
