First Shell
The innermost electron shell of an atom, which can hold a maximum of 2 electrons.
Second Shell
The second electron shell of an atom, which can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.
Third Shell
The third electron shell of an atom, which can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.

A classroom cheer used to remember the electron capacities of the first three shells (2, 8, and 8).
Sodium Electron Configuration
An atom with 11 total electrons, configured with 2 electrons on the inner shell, 8 on the middle shell, and 1 on the outer shell.
Potassium Electron Configuration
An atom with 19 total electrons, configured with 2 electrons on the first shell, 8 on the second shell, 8 on the third shell, and 1 on the fourth shell.
Valence Shell
The outer shell of an atom.
Valence Electrons
The electrons located on the outer shell of an atom that determine whether the atom will be reactive or not.
Reactive
Having a chemical reaction upon coming in contact with substances such as water or air.
Fluorine Valence Electrons
Fluorine has 7 valence electrons on its outer shell.
Neon Valence Electrons
Neon has 8 valence electrons on its outer shell.
Boron Valence Electrons
Boron has 3 valence electrons on its outer shell, with 2 electrons on its inner shell.
Beryllium (Be)
An atom containing 4 total electrons, configured with 2 electrons on the first shell and 2 electrons on the second shell.
