Term (Court Term)

A session of court consisting of $4$-week sessions, with a total of $13$ terms in a year.

Part (of Court)

A designated unit of the court in which specified business is conducted by a judge or quasi-judicial officer.

Notice of Appearance (Criminal)

A document an attorney must file on or before the first court appearance or no later than $10$ days after being appointed or retained, whichever is sooner.

Virtual Proceeding Request

A request that must be received at least $1$ business day prior to a virtual appearance to ensure the proceeding is viewable to the public in a designated area.

Individual Assignment System (IAS)

A system where civil actions are assigned to a judge upon the filing of a Request for Judicial Intervention ($RJI$), making that judge responsible for all subsequent proceedings.

Confidential Personal Information (CPI)

Electronic Document Delivery System; used to transmit court documents to the court via a designated website.

Request for Judicial Intervention (RJI)

A required filing when there is no judge assigned, filed with specific papers such as an Order to Show Cause, Notice of Motion, or Note of Issue.

Word Count Limit (Motions)

Standard limit of $7,000$ words for affidavits, affirmations, briefs, and memoranda; reply papers are limited to $4,200$ words.

Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) Ex-Parte

An order that should not be issued without notice unless the moving party demonstrates significant prejudice or that a good faith effort to provide notice was made.

Differentiated Case Management (DCM)

A system setting discovery schedules: Expedited ($8$ months), Standard ($12$ months), and Complex ($15$ months).

Settlement Conference (Mortgage Foreclosure)

A conference that must be scheduled by the court within $60$ days after the filing of the $RJI$ in residential mortgage foreclosure actions.

Note of Issue (NOI)

A document with proof of service that must be filed before any case is deemed ready for trial.
