Personality

Sigmund Freud

Psychoanalytic Theory of Personality
Freud's theory explaining personality through three distinct components: Id, Ego, and Superego.
Id
The most primitive part of personality present from birth that contains instincts, impulses, and desires, operating on the pleasure principle.
Pleasure Principle
The operating principle of the Id that seeks immediate gratification.
Ego
The rational part of personality that develops around age 2-3 and operates on the reality principle to balance desires with reality.
Reality Principle
The operating principle of the Ego that balances internal desires with external reality.
Superego
The component of personality that develops around age 5, represents morals, values, and societal rules, strives for perfection, and judges actions as right or wrong.
Moral Principle
The operating principle of the Superego that focuses on morality, values, and societal standards.
Healthy Personality
A state achieved when there is a proper balance among the Id, Ego, and Superego.
