Three major regions of Skin
Epidermis - outermost superficial region
Dermis - middle region
Hypodermis - deepest region (superficial fascia)

Thin Skin (keratinocytes)
Four layers (strata) are present all over body - hairy skin
Stratified squamous keratinizing epithelium

Thick Skin (keratinocytes)
Five layers (strata) found on palms of hands and soles of feet

Thick vs Thin Skin

Layers of the Dermis: Papillary Layer
Areolar connective tissue
Dermal papillae
Meisner’s corpuscles

Dermis

Layers of the Dermis: Reticular Layer
Dense irregular connective tissue
Collagen fibers
Elastin fibers
Pacinian (Lamellated) corpuscles

Hypodermis
Subcutaneous layer deep to the skin
Composed of adipose and areolar connective tissue

Sebaceous Glands
Simple alveolar glands found all over the body
Soften skin when stimulated by hormones
Secrete an oily secretion called sebum
Discharge waxy sebum onto hair shaft when associated with hairs
Sebaceous follicles discharge into epidermal surface

Suderiferous Glands
Apocrine sweat glands
Produce odorous secretion
Pheromones
Merocrine (eccrine) sweat glands
Sensible perspiration
