Coordinating Conjunctions

Conjunctions (such as und, oder, aber, sondern, and denn) that connect words, phrases, or sentences without affecting word order when connecting sentences.

aber

Coordinating conjunction meaning 'but' or 'however,' normally used to express the juxtaposition of ideas.

sondern

Coordinating conjunction meaning 'but, rather' or 'on the contrary,' used when a negative (such as nicht or kein) is part of the first contrasted element and two mutually exclusive ideas are juxtaposed.

denn

Coordinating conjunction meaning 'because' or 'for.'

zwar

An adverb often added to the first contrasted element to accentuate juxtaposition when using 'aber.'
