Policy
A plan of action adopted by a government, individual, and or business.
Domestic Policy
Policy existing or occurring inside a particular country, specifically America or on American soil.
Foreign Policy
Policy relating to a country that is not one's own; anything outside of America.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
A military alliance between 30 countries in Europe and North America.
League of Nations
An organization founded after the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 with goals of disarmament, preventing war, settling disputes, and improving global welfare.
United Nations (UN)
An organization formed after World War II in 1945 with the goals of maintaining world peace, developing friendly relations among nations, and promoting cooperation in solving global problems.
World Trade Organization (WTO)
An organization that handles the rules and regulations of trading between countries; deals with international trading.
International Red Cross
An organization that gives assistance to victims of war and other situations of violence; started in Switzerland.
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
A program within the United Nations that assists with developmental aid for children around the world, mainly in times of emergencies.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
A failed attempt on April 17, 1961, to remove Fidel Castro from power in Cuba, involving CIA-trained Cuban exiles.
Cuban Missile Crisis
A 1962 Cold War event where the Soviet Union was secretly planting nuclear weapons in Cuba, leading to a tense standoff between the US and the Soviet Union.
The Gulf Wars
1st Gulf War: Iraq invaded Kuwait and the US started with sanctioning Iraq until it turned into a war. 2nd Gulf War: The United States occupied Iraq for a short period of time until we were pushed out of the territory.
Iran Hostage Crisis
An event in 1979 where more than 50 American diplomats were held hostage at the Iranian embassy by Iranian college students for 440 days.
Korean War
A war where the United States helped South Korea stop the spread of communism from North Korea, resulting in a permanent divide between North and South.
Vietnam War
A war where the United States tried to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam, influenced by the domino theory; ended with a cease fire and US protests.
World War 1
1914-1918. Fought mainly in Europe. U.S. , France, Great Britain vs. Germany and Austria-Hungary. Started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was assassinated by Serbian soldiers.
World War 2
1939-1945. Great Britain, France, United States, Soviet Union, and more were allied against Italy, Germany, and Japan. Originally the United States stayed neutral but the Attack on Pearl Harbor caused them to join. Allied Powers won the war and divided Germany into sections between Soviet Union, U.S., and Soviet Union.
